Resources for Siblings

(For help opening PDF files please click here.)

When a child has a disability all family members are effected. Often siblings are overlooked or have additional responsibilities. Many siblings may love their brother or sister, but it is normal to have a range of emotions including:

  • Having "Survivors Guilt " about being the unimpaired sibling
  • Feeling like they need to be perfect
  • Feeling like they need to get really out of control to get some attention
  • Feeling anxious about being responsible for their sibling once their parents are deceased
  • Feeling jealous about the attention their sibling receives

All of these feelings are normal and the sibling should be able to express them freely. Because the sibling has mixed emotions about their brother/sister doesn't mean they love their brother/sister any less. Sometimes joining a sibling workshop can be helpful to meet other people who are in a similar situation.
